I took this photo yesterday about prime time, meaning prime time light, what little there was. People were having family picnics on benches just in front of me. They seemed oblivious or at least uninterested in the show the sky was putting on.
Last night I woke just before midnight. I lay in bed around ten minutes before I felt a motion. I thought “Is this one of those moments I’m feeling involuntary body movement?” The movement pretty quickly became pronounced. Although not very strong it was strong enough and lasted at least a minute or two. When done I looked at the clock next to my bed. It was 11:55pm. This earthquake could be called the Halloween earthquake…unless of course we have another before then.
When I woke I remembered dreaming of a tsunami. I then remembered reading an article about dreams. A theory that the significance dreams had was a survival mechanism in a sense to warn us of danger. Guess a tsunami could happen although I don’t know if there’s a danger of a tsunami this particular time. I think I’ll avoid walking too close to the shoreline though.

Pictured above for those of you who don’t know, the keeper of Allen’s Zoo exploring one of my favorite places.
I saw something while exploring the intertidal zone today I’m not likely to see for a while again if at all. While looking at the usually seen inhabitants, (hermit crabs, starfish, sea urchins) I rounded a rock and saw what I initially thought was the largest starfish I’d ever seen. It was about two and a half feet long (.7 meters). My mind making sense of something I’d never seen in the wild. Then realized then it wasn’t a starfish. It was a Pacific Octopus. I recognized the coloration from images in books I’ve used as reference. Although I know they happen around these ocean zones I didn’t know if it was still alive. It was not in water. I reached for my camera then remembered took the batteries out yesterday as they needed to be replaced. I then thought it probably wasn’t alive and waiting for the tide like the other things in the intertidal zone. I thought it’d be sad to photograph it then.
Also……Happy Mothers Day mom and all moms.

Taken about a week ago I thought this photo had a look of Biblical proportions.

Many of you already know I’m a cinephile possibly from mentioning it on previous posts. I’ve only recently become a fan of the late Yashujiro Ozu. Two of his films resonate with me Late Spring 1949, the first of his later films and An Autumn Afternoon 1963 his last film. These films have made such an impression on me I’ve watched them at least a half a dozen times each, finding the commentary on the DVD very informative and helpful to understand and appreciate these films. I’m not an old film buff, I often find many films of this similar time too dated for me to appreciate. These two films however seem to transcend that and reveal the essence of what it is to be human and that’s art.

This holiday my spare time is happily set aside for walking along various shorelines with my daughter. I loved the ocean as long as I could remember. The immensity of the horizon seems to put things in their proper perspective, makes other concerns insignificant.

At least one of the places. Some may recognize this photo posted for a short time in a different format here. It’s returned to stay. I think this photo offers a nice contrast to the snow. If you don’t see it move your mouse.
