Isle of the Dolls

ValleyoftheDolls

I went out early one morning this weekend for my walk. Earlier than my usual early. Before the sun had risen. When I got to the promenade there were a few cars. Another car drove up and three young girls got out. They were young. Young enough to make me wonder which one was old enough to drive? I also thought we must be the only people out. As they passed me they acted as guilty as heck…like they were hiding something. Shrug. One said “Hi!”, really just way to put on a face. She was the one with very long wavy hair. “Good morning”. They went down to the beach and I walked by. On my way back home I saw one of the group was sitting on the beach. The others were in the water. They were only a silhouette in the dark. Must have been cold. Skinny dipping?

Beach n’ People

Beachn'People

I know I’ve mentioned this before…I have the most fun sketching people. This is the first time I’ve sketched people on the beach. It hadn’t crossed my mind before getting into I’d get as much attention (back). It was alright though.

Desert Bats

I could clearly see the desert environment in this sketch that I drew while waiting for the library to open. Sometimes it’s not so obvious.
One morning just as a gray of light was peeking over the horizon I took a walk. It was deserted and soundless except for the hum of streetlights. I rounded into a parking lot, where by then all you could see was a cloudy sky. Just then something flew silhouetted against that sky. I thought what kind of bird is that? When I asked myself that I realized it was no bird. It was flapping to stay aloft. Flapping like a bat. Then another. The silhouette was clear. The two were flying around right there not more than fifteen feet in the sky in front of me. Flying around as if they were playing. Now I know I said “cool”. Of course no one was there to hear me except the bats. I thought bats are more often found in deserts aren’t they? Well against that dark cloudy sky it felt like Transylvania.

I got side tracked yesterday when I came upon this. I thought it could have been a place they filmed one of those old TV westerns.

I saw something recently I’d like to share I thought was appropriate here. While downtown I saw a man with two mules. Directly across from the city hall, in the middle of a bustling city. He looked like a prospector. I had to blink a couple of times. Now I know I’m in the wild west!

Happy Father’s Day, everyone.

HC1 Anytime I can find a moment to draw is a good one. Here I had a moment to draw the houses perched on the overlooking California hills before my class. As I was drawing, the title of this post came to mind, albeit misspelled on the top image here. Funny how this terminology, here from a TV western remembered from childhood, comes back with a little more significance.

Motel California

motelDone in my car after having my brown-bagged lunch. I couldn’t resist the view. It seemed it was from another time in America.
