Coyotes, Calves, and Allergies

While drawing these hills this guy came by, pulling up in a pick-up truck. He came over to look at my drawing. His name was Jim. He’s a rancher here, tending the cattle I’ve seen in the morning that graze on the hills and doing the various chores. He talked about the life and death struggles between coyotes and the calves on these hills. He felt the calves held their own pretty well. At the time I was having my own struggle with the elements: allergies. And they were definitely getting the better of me.

I took this photo during a rare moment walking when the sun had risen.
I saw yet another shooting star about a week ago just before the sun rose. It was over the ocean more westerly than the previous two. This time I was facing it directly and could trace the streak across the sky. It was a long streak of light, it’s origin was a slightly thicker light tapering towards the end. Like the others it was just a brief moment…which I guess makes these moments all that more magical.

I had 15 minutes to sketch before the library opened.

I was sketching employees (middle management?) at a now familiar place for me.

Dawn of the Raccoon

beautifulmorning copy

I painted this during my usual crazy early hour of the morning walk. You can see that it was pretty dark. After sitting there awhile, I heard a kind of purring sound. It reminded me of the sound that dinosaur made in Jurassic Park before it attacked Newman. I didn’t move at first, then I turned and clearly saw a raccoon standing up looking at me not three yards away, and another scampering away. I said softly, “It’s okay.” I said it not only to calm the raccoon… but also to calm myself. Then I turned and deliberately walked away.
